Stage 18 – Alpe d’Huez

976293_557966110929464_763251916_oWe had been looking forward to and we have great respect for this stage. Since tomorrow’s stage is the hardest of this year’s Tour, we prepared by setting the alarm at 4 A.m. We were joined by Hannu, Guido and Tomas. Hans Christian returned from vacation to our support team and Hannu’s support team, Miia, helped us as well. Cristophe joined us at midpoint of the stage. And I am not forgetting the 6 people of our regural support team.  Hope I didn’t forget anyone? It is starting to feel like a huge sporting event!!

The early morning was really beautiful. Actually, the whole day was quite gorgeous. Really classic scenery of the Alps around each corner. We had lunch at road cycling Mecha, Bourg d’Oisans. The view from Alpe d’Huez towards Ecrinsin is always wonderful, but the THING about this place is the fans, not nature.

It rained. For the first time during this Tour it was not 30 degrees celsius or sunny. It was very refreshing, however, constant rain for a longer period of time would have made the whole Tour twice as hard.

The spectators were a little quiet at first in the rain. The downhill of Sarenne is the kind of downhill road, that will kill someone if you race too hard.

The second time up Alpe d’Huez the support from the spectators started to get more lively and our whole team kicked up with good speed. We didn’t  actually race each other, each went at their own time and pace. My time was 1:07, which I am very happy about! 15 years ago I was only 2 minutes faster and my condition then was propably a lot better than now. The explanation is equipment development and improved kicking technique. I do recommend a more upright kicking position  with the weight leaning back. Half of our team lifted the body position more up for this Tour and Jani  agrees with me that there is no going back to the old, lower position, even in competitions.

The descent went smoothly, too. By the Dutch corner, the party people had their own security and our cars were nicely guided to pass. At Ventoux the most eager party people tried to rip people out from the moving vehicles if the doors were not locked, that happend to us!

Etappi 18 – Alpe d’Huez

Tätä etappia sekä odotettiin että kunnioitettiin. Koska huomenna on koko tourin kovin päivä, varmistelimme onnistumista laittamalla herätyskellon neljäksi.
